Celebrating Lent

For the past several years, I have greatly enjoyed celebrating Lent. It has consistently been a time of refreshing spiritual renewal for me particularly through the guidance of our church in San Antonio. During the Lenten season, I have given up various (often seemingly trivial) things that have made lasting impressions on my life, renewing my perspective and returning my focus to Christ.

Each year, Redeemer releases a new Lent Devotional Guide that I find very helpful. It is geared towards families, but the reminders, prayers, and lessons have universal appeal.

This article, Lent--Why Bother?, from Christianity Today has also been a helpful reminder to me this year of the value of celebrating Lent. Another lovely little Lenten Devotional is freely available from Ann Voskmap.

This Lenten season Josh and I are refocusing on living simply, fully, and intentionally. Pursuing times of reflection, quiet, and rest. Choosing peace and quiet over the distractions of TV, Facebook, etc., habits that tend to mindlessly fill our time.

I have a little list of gems to read, enjoy, and ponder during this season. A few are new, most are old favorites.

The Way of the Heart by Henri Nouwen
Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter
A Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindberg
Sabbath by Dan Allender
Letters from the Diminished Church by Dorothy Sayers

Another title that I am hoping to add this year is Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross, by Nancy Guthrie, author of my favorite Advent Devotional.

What a blessing to have this time to celebrate Jesus, find spiritual renewal, and prepare our hearts for Easter!
