I am from projects are currently decorating my library. They include a self portrait photograph and an I am from statement. I love these projects and getting to know my students through them.
Here is a brief excerpt from one:
I am from bluebonnets and mesquite trees. I am from tamales at grandma's, catching my first fish, road trips to tio's house, Spanglish, scrabble on Christmas Eve. I am from Where The Wild Things Are, pink lemonade, and never giving up.
I was inspired to answer the question for myself. Here goes:
I am from tall trees, snow angels, and jet engines firing up on the tarmac.
I am from the taste of fresh pineapple in a Japanese market and riding my bike on a street lined with cherry trees, blossoms in full bloom. I am from family at Christmas, sleigh rides, and learning to ski.
I am from little league, snow days, best friends, and games of make believe. I am from lazy summers with cousins, water skiing, camping, watermelon on the back porch. I am from sandy white beaches, playing from the men's tees in the warm Florida sunshine, and homework at the beach club listening to the music of the waves.
I am from busy days of college, writing and dreaming. Running through campus, by the lake, over the crunchy shelled walkway of Bruton Parish Church. Skipping class, brownie bites, RUF, Carly Simon, and discovering the world.
I am from colorful busy Peruvian streets, teaching, churros, and Spanish. Machu Picchu, Ecuador, rafting on the amazon. Learning, hoping, growing, becoming.
I am from rich culture, marathons, happy days spent in a library, learning to love, and finding my heart and home in a wonderful man.
Where are you from?
"snow days, best friends, and games of make believe" makes me well up with tears of sweet memories.
