On Saturday, of mom's visit, we were met by another rainy day. We refused to stay indoors so we put on our raincoats and headed to the farmers market. Just when we arrived the rain abated allowing us to enjoy the sights and smells of a morning at the market.
We wandered through the tents and picked up some veggies and fruit as well as some lovely oversized sunflowers. They are STILL brightening up my kitchen with their delightful sunshiny blooms.
The delicious aroma of freshly made omelets wafted through the market and we were hooked. We shared a huge omelet full of basil, pumpkin, zucchini, tomatoes, goat cheese, and much more wonderfulness. Needless to say, we ate every single bite.
The sky cleared a bit as the afternoon came upon us. We got in the car with our Garmin and headed to Smith Berry Winery which had been recommended to us by one of Josh's coworkers.
It was awesome.
First, the drive was gorgeous. Even the dreary grey weather couldn't disguise the loveliness of Kentucky's rolling green countryside. The winery itself is situated on an old dairy farm. The farm buildings have been restored to accommodate the winery and are beautiful.
We chatted it up with the owner's daughter and discovered that she was the granddaughter of the divine Wendell Berry.
Say what?!
So cool. We perused their Wendell Berry collection, tasted their fabulous wine, then bought some freshly made cheese and of course a book.
The rain kindly held off so we could sit outside and enjoy this heavenly place.
We sat and enjoyed...then sat and enjoyed some more. It was beautiful and relaxing. I can't wait to go back with Josh!!
When we finished our snack, the owner of the vineyard walked over with his sweet puppy Rosie to see how we were fairing. He offered to give us an informal tour of the winery which is housed in the old dairy barn. We accepted, of course, and enjoyed a delightful tour and witnessed firsthand his passion for his job. He had a dream and made it happen, out of a dairy farm no less, how inspiring!
A wonderful day!! Thank you again for your gracious hospitality!!
